Every Mangalorean in Bangalore

We always knew that we Mangaloreans are everywhere, this belief grew stronger once we started Wotrasi and we got a few orders/inquiries from places we never really even imagined. Regardless of where you’re from and where you are currently, home is always home! We at Team Wotrasi share the same feeling.

When you stay away from home, there are a couple of things you enjoy and more than a couple of things you would miss about home. We dedicate this blog to all those Mangaloreans staying away from home.

Unfortunately, all of us have only been in Bangalore before we came together here, hence, we can only speak on behalf of the other Mangaloreans in Bangalore. Well, here goes:

Things that are too real for every Mangalorean in Bangalore:

  1. Anybody who has been in Mangalore, knows how amazing rain is, the city gets nice and clean, everything looks extra green and combine this with a hot cup of tea/coffee and some goli baje, well there is nothing quite amazing as that. Cut to Bangalore, as wonderful as it is, stops functioning the second it starts to rain, the roads get blocked, there is dirty water everywhere! Makes you miss home a little, at least for us!
  2. Bangalore has a lot of options when it comes to food, you get every cuisine you can think of, unlike Mangalore where all you get is Indian or Chinese, but when you feel like having some neer dosa or a little bit of kori rotti, no Mangalorean restraunt can match food from here.
  3. To be really honest, all of us almost died of a heart attack the first time we went out to watch a movie (in a proper multiplex) in Bangalore, the entire experience (popcorn and everything) will cost you not less than Rs. 700, while you get the same thing here for like Rs. 350. To those who continue to watch movies in these places in Bangalore, we truly salute you!
  4.  We bet you to find one person from Mangalore who does not complain of dry/damaged hair because of Bangalore water! You must agree, water here feels a lot better!
  5. It is really unfortunate that Mangalore and Bangalore are different by just 1 letter. It gets really difficult when people ask you where you are from and you need to repeat a couple of times “Mangalore, with an M”. This couldn’t have happened just to us right?
  6. I often told people that I do not stay in the city of Mangalore, I stay a little on the outer side, this place called Surathkal. The immediate question used to be  – How far away is the city? My reply would be – Around 20 Kms. This was met with utter shock! I was not aware yet that in Bangalore, you do not measure distance in KMs but in the time it takes to reach the place. Travelling 40 Kms to go and come from Mangalore seemed too much for them!
  7. Anytime we heard even a little bit of Tulu or Konkani or even Mangalore Kannada for that matter, we get really excited. We also get really angry when people assume that we know Malayalam because we are from Mangalore!
  8. Good thing about Bangalore however, is the weather there. For those that are used to having summer all year along, it is a relief to be in Bangalore when even the summers have pleasant evenings! Its been close to 2 years now since we’ve all come back home and every day we curse the weather, wondering how we managed to survive for 20+ years!
  9. Speaking of good things, we also miss the crazy amount of options Bangalore had for weekend plans, the easily available Olas and Ubers to help us get through these weekend plans. Mangalore does have your all time classic hang out spots, but nothing can truly even compare to Bangalore
  10. All the overnight bus journeys to come back home did give us the extremely important skill of sleeping through the Ghat section!
  11. One of the good things of being in Mangalore, you know there are many, but one of them is the fact that you know everyone around you, you’ve grown with a lot of kids who live close to you, you know them from school all the way to college, there isn’t really a lot of scope to meet new people, which is what you get when you move to a different place, you meet new people, have new experiences and grow as a person!
  12. You start to realize the value of the beach when you go to a place like Bangalore!
  13. Mangalore is a town that falls asleep by 11:00 on most nights and these days, on the weekends, it will probably stay awake till 12:00 at the max. Being from such a place, Bangalore is an enigma, even though Mumbai is the Indian city that never sleeps, Bangalore nights are enough to amaze us!
  14. One thing we truly love about being in Bangalore is that there is no constant fear of some aunty/uncle snooping around your life and keeping tabs on your activities. But then, who are we kidding! like we said earlier, Mangaloreans are everywhere, and we can never be too careful when it comes to these aunties/uncles!
  15. Living away from home is always fun, you stay by yourself, no one to question you, you can be out with your friends as much as you want, you can have people over…this list is endless, but, there is always a but, but every time you visit home and it is time to leave back , there will always be this sinking feeling inside you, which you can’t truly explain, but it’s always there!

We could go on forever, but we choose to stop here!

For all you guys staying away from home, we have little something that might make you miss home a little less! Shop at Wotrasi.com, get quirky t-shirts and carry a part of Mangalore with you!

Mangalore misses you!
